Our Curriculum Vision

Our curriculum is broad and balanced, focusing on depth of learning and mastery of skills and content. We teach through a mainly topic-based approach where appropriate, to encourage the pupils to make links and develop and apply skills across different curriculum areas, while also maintaining the identity and unique skills and vocabulary needed for the different subjects studied.

We believe that our curriculum helps pupils make sense of the world in which they live, and allows them to think of solutions to problems they currently face. Our core values are being embedded across our curriculum, enabling pupils to think critically about their contribution to the world and to develop an awareness of the impact their own actions can have on others. 

Our Learning

At St Peter’s School we believe in the concept of lifelong learning and the idea that both adults and children learn new things every day. We endeavour to provide a rich and varied learning environment as well as a range of experiences and opportunities which allow children to fulfil their potential.

Teaching our children to be effective communicators is also very important to us. We are working on integrating key oracy skills across the curriculum through well planned discussions, debates, roleplay, enquiry and dialogue. This is to build confidence in our children to become persuasive speakers, critical listeners and analytic thinkers. We aim to support our children to be successful and happy citizens who can meet the challenges of life in the 21st century.

Through learning we aim to:

• enable children to become confident, resourceful, enquiring and independent learners;
• foster children’s self-esteem and help them build positive relationships with other people;
• develop children’s self-respect and encourage children to respect the ideas, attitudes, values and feelings of others;
• show respect for all cultures and, in so doing, to promote positive attitudes towards other people;
• enable children to understand their community and help them feel valued as part of this community;
• help children grow into reliable, independent and positive citizens.

We aim to engage pupils and motivate them by providing them with as many ‘hands-on’ and creative experiences as possible and use outdoor learning and technology to support classroom practice where appropriate.

We use effective questioning strategies to challenge and engage all children, giving them time to think and share their thoughts, valuing all contributions and facilitating discussion that enables them to deepen their understanding.

We praise children for their efforts, clarify any misunderstandings and celebrate their achievements; by so doing we aim to build positive attitudes towards school and an acceptance that making mistakes is part of learning. 

We encourage a "Growth Mindset" approach to learning - this is exemplified by our core values and our school motto:

At St Peter’s we encourage lots of interactions! Regular feedback between pupils and teachers allows the learning to become closely tailored to each child’s individual needs.  We try to ensure that we personalise learning towards the needs of each individual pupil because every pupil is different which means we can maximise the progress of every pupil.
